BATON ROUGE – LSU men’s basketball opens the season with a win over LSU New Orleans, beating the Privateers 100-57.
The Tigers were led in scoring by point guard Donovan Dent with 19 points, he was joined by five other Tigers who scored in double figures.
“It was a good first win,” Wade said of the opening win in his return to the regular season as head coach of the Tigers.
“I thought Sal (Niang) was tremendous and was the point of the press. Six steals, 14 rebounds, five offensive rebounds; he does so much to help you win. An incredible passer and he makes the press work, keeping the ball inbounds against them. He was tremendous tonight. Our free throw shooting was improved. I wish we took more of them…and it’s something we put a lot of work in. Our rebounding was improved, a lot to build off of and we got to be better as we move forward. The second half effort wasn’t good enough. Got to play up a certain standard, but overall, a solid first outing. A lot we got to clean up before we go play Friday. (Niang) I thought was tremendous, Donny (Dent) was great, 10 assists and no turnovers. In total, control of the game. Those two things popped out. I was really happy to get G (Levy) in there and he’s a really good shooter. Happy to get him in there and get him going. Overall solid night, lot of work ahead of us.”
LSU shared the ball as well with Dent providing ten of the Tigers 24 assists on the night. The Tigers did commit 12 turnovers which UNO turned into 14 points.
After struggling to field a full roster for most of the exhibition slate, Will Wade played his entire bench in the win on Tuesday night in the Maravich Center with no starter logging more than 31 minutes.
LSU dominated the paints with 60 points down low that led to over 51% shooting from the floor for the Tigers.
LSU will be back home on Friday taking on Texas Southern at 7 p.m.
