BATON ROUGE — This weekend, the Crimson Tide is returning to Death Valley.
Over the 131-year history of the LSU-Alabama rivalry, the teams have played each other 90 times, with Bama leading the series 58–27–5.
This week, WBRZ’s John Pastorek takes a look back at some of the most iconic moments of the rivalry.
On Sept. 27, 1958, LSU and Alabama met in Mobile, a matchup that saw Alabama coach Bear Bryant face off against the newly unveiled Chinese Bandits. One of the game’s most memorable plays was when Billy Cannon blasted up the middle for 13 yards during the second quarter.
But a hard hit caused a fumble, and Alabama’s Duff Morrison grabbed it out of the air and scrambled 45 yards to the Tiger 5-yard-line. LSU coach Paul Dietzel sent in the Chinese Bandits, stopping the Tide and forcing them to settle for a field goal. The Tigers won the game 13-3.
On Saturday, the rivalry continues at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WBRZ.
