After three straight daytime kickoffs, LSU will play at night again.
The Tigers’ contest this coming Saturday with Texas has been set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on ABC. LSU played Mississippi State at home and Auburn on the road in consecutive 11 a.m. games before its Alabama matchup in Tiger Stadium was set for 2:30 p.m.
Lane Kiffin was “shocked” when the Alabama game was not slated for a night kickoff, but he went on to say he wasn’t surprised, though, because of ongoing tensions between LSU and the conference.
But ESPN, which designates television assignments, has put the Tigers (6-3, 3-3 SEC) back at night for the second of three straight games against ranked teams despite a 31-13 loss to the Crimson Tide (7-2, 5-2) that has their College Football Playoff chances on life support.
If LSU can beat CFP-ranked No. 7 Texas, and then win on the road at No. 13 Tennessee and Arkansas, there’s a chance the Tigers could get into the 12-team playoff with three SEC losses. Those defeats have come to current No. 5 Alabama, No. 6 Kentucky and No. 10 Ole Miss.
Kentucky just lost 34-6 at Tennessee, though, to pick up a second SEC loss. Ole Miss recorded its third defeat with a 42-7 result in Oxford, Mississippi.
Texas (7-2, 4-2) just beat No. 18 Missouri this weekend ahead of a visit to Baton Rouge. The Longhorns have bounced back from consecutive 27-24 losses to Oklahoma and Florida with three straight wins, including a 34-27 victory over Ole Miss.
Quarterback Arch Manning, the graduate of Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, has thrown for 517 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions in his last two games.
